Mission Mangal is a film based on India’s Mars Mission that placed the Mangalyaan satellite in the Mars orbit. Fictionalised for cinematic purposes, the film is India’s first Space motion picture. After a failed GSLV rocket launch, Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar), the head of the launch team is shunted to the Mars programme, that nobody believes can really happen and therefore low on ISRO’s priority. It’s almost like a punishment posting. Tara (Vidya Balan) his senior team member who blames herself and is full of guilt for the failure of GSLV, in a moment of inspiration, discovers a way to make the Mars Mission possible right away. Tara and Rakesh present an audacious plan to the head of ISRO. Against all odds, on a shoestring budget, with an inexperienced team, through sheer passion, innovation and team work, they stun the world and put India on the space map. An incredible mission that led to the film also being made with the same inventiveness, on a minimal budget, in record time.
