Pad Man is the world’s first mainstream feature film on the topic of Menstrual hygiene. It is the official, though fictionalized for screen, story of Padmashri Arunachalam Muruganatham, the man who revolutionized the manufacture of the low cost sanitary napkins in India. Lakshmi (Akshay) is a newly married, humble welder from a rural village in the heart of India. Lakshmi’s incredible journey starts when he is shocked to discover that his wife uses an unhygienic cloth during her periods. Unable to afford a branded pad, he decides to make a sanitary pad himself. Lakshmi’s determination to make the pad embarrasses his wife so much that she leaves him. He leaves his village but doesn’t give up his mission of making a good sanitary pad. His simplicity of thought, his resilience, his focus and his complete disregard for convention finally creates a revolution. In Lakshmi’s own words, ‘only the mad become truly famous’. Padman opened up the conversation on the taboo topic of menstrual hygiene like never before.
